Cormac McCarthy: Cesta (zamyšlení nad knihou)

Novela Cesta, kterou napsal Cormac McCarthy, se stala prodejním bestselerem, ale zároveň si velmi slušně vede i u kritiky. Nejvýznamnější ocenění, které svému autorovi přinesla, je patrně Pulitzerova cena. Jak se stane, že knihu kladně přijmou „prostí“ čtenáři, stejně jako „přísná“ kritika? Odpovědět dokážu kupodivu docela snadno: knížka se velmi dobře čte, není „hloupá“ a přes všechno popisované utrpení, všechny ty hrůzy je v ní naděje.

1. Je to takový ten typ knihy, která se čte na jeden zátah. Zakousne se do vás a nepustí. Promlouvá filmovým jazykem a přímo si říká o zfilmování. Text je vystaven na krátkých větách. Úsečné dialogy netrpí upovídaností. Setkáme se s minimem složitých souvětí. Člověk se až zdráhá uvěřit, jaká (narativní) síla může čišet z takto jednoduše napsaného textu. Inu, ne nadarmo se říká: v jednoduchosti je síla.

Příběh je prostý: Země se po globální katastrofě proměnila v pustinu a jen „dožívá“. Zbylo jen pár lidí. Mezi nimi otec se synem, kteří putují na jih. Cestou řeší více méně obdobné situace: sehnat jídlo, rozdělat oheň, vyhnout se nebezpečí, nenechat se sníst jinými lidmi (těmi zlými). Příběh je utvořen ze série de facto velmi podobných výjevů, které zpravidla zasahují čtenářovy emoce. Text tím pochopitelně získává na působivosti a naléhavosti. Ale taktéž to může vzbudit podezření, že autor záměrně balancuje na samé hranici citového vydírání.

Druhou berličkou, kterou si autor pomáhá k uhranutí čtenáře, je prostředí, ve kterém se příběh odehrává. Postapokalyptický svět je svět reálně neexistující, z čehož pro spisovatele pramení různé výhody. Může povolit uzdu své fantazii a ohromovat čtenáře hrůzostrašnými „detaily“ tohoto „exotického“ prostředí. Které ostatně na první pohled zaujme již pouhou svou, čtenářem dosud neobjevenou (neboť tento svět neexistuje), jinakostí.

2. Postapokalyptické plahočení se světem vybízí k otázkám po smyslu života, bytí; k otázkám po bohu. McCarthy se však vyhnul hlubokým filozofickým a sofistikovaným úvahám. Hrdinové příběhu nesvádějí složitý vnitřní zápas, neobracejí se k bohu s výčitkou, nepochybují o jeho existenci. Bůh je, byť jde možná „pouze“ o jakousi mravní sílu v člověku (ti hodní, nositelé světla). Ať je to tedy s vírou jakkoliv, zůstává zachována víra v člověka.

Těžiště knihy však leží jinde. Je jím dilema otce, který cítí, že mu docházejí síly, a který má hrůzu z utrpení, které po jeho smrti zachvátí jeho malého syna. Je si vědom, že jediný způsob, jak své dítě ochránit před krutostí zdevastovaného světa, je zabít ho dříve, než zemře sám.
